So here’s the nightmare scenario. You want some pizza rolls in the middle of the night, but everyone else in your household has already gone off to Slumber Land. Typically, you’re forced to microwave your pizza rolls then do the fast stop button push before the timer reaches 0:00, which is asinine.
Surely there’s a way to silence your microwave that doesn’t involve hitting it with a baseball bat! Can you turn off the beeps when the microwaving is done or is that a bridge too far?
How to Silence a Microwave
You can silence most microwaves by reading the manual and learning how to set the microwave on a silent mode like you would on your phone. This gets rid of the beeps. Many modern microwaves even have a mute button available to turn the sound off.
Just look for the “Sound” button on your microwave keypad. You might need to search more closely because some models might have it hidden or you need additional button presses to access it. You can find most “Sound” buttons near the Clock/Time buttons.
Once you push the button, you should see the display show a “SILENT”, “MUTE” or “QUIET” mode or go “OFF”.
How to Press the Sound Button Properly
Turning the sound off might require a single push but most require you to press or hold the button for a couple to seconds (usually 2-3 seconds until something happens). Manufacturers made it so to prevent accidental button presses from muting the microwave.
Lock the silent mode by pressing the “Start” button after seeing the “QUIET”, “SILENT”, “MUTE” or “OFF” words on the display. You won’t have to hear another beep from the microwave until you turn the sound back on.
Beeping is important because it alerts you when your food is done without wasting electricity in keeping the microwave plugged in or turned on.
How to Reactivate the Microwave Beeps
If you wish to take your microwave out of Silent or Mute mode, press the “Sound” button again. You should then see on the display the word “ON” or “SOUND ON” words. In which case, you should hit the “Start” button. This will activate the microwave beeps once more.
If the “Sound” Icon is crossed out during Silent mode, indicating the microwave beeps have been muted, then it should not be crossed out when activating normal sound mode once more.
What to Do If Your Microwave Doesn’t Have A Sound Button?
Read the manual in order to access Silent mode on models that don’t have their own “Sound” button. It typically requires button presses on the keypad, as though you’re unlocking a safe or activating a cheat code for some video game.
In such cases, manufacturers might use a button that has a dual function for sound. For example, some models allow you to mute the microwave when you hold down the “0” button on your numerical keypad or the “Cancel” button right beside your “Start” button.
Again, search for the microwave’s manual that came with it or if you can’t find it instead look for it on the Internet (usually in a website or PDF form). This will inform you how to mute your microwave.
Try the Quick Break Routine
If you can’t silence the beast then the best you can do is to open your microwave door or push the “Cancel” button as soon as the timer goes to 00:01 seconds or sooner.
If you have issues with your microwave beeping incessantly because its sensors keep detecting something is inside your microwave, you can instead reset the sensors to alleviate the beeping of your microwave.
A fast refresh of your microwave sensors will keep the beeps to a minimum. Here’s what you need to do. It involves a quick microwave cooking session to work.
How to Reset the Microwave Sensors
Get a small cup of water. Add salt or sugar to it. Don’t microwave plain water because the water could end up superheated to the point that it’d explode spontaneously.
Place the cup of water inside the microwave. Microwave it on the lowest setting for a few seconds. You need at least 15 seconds of microwave action in order to ensure your sensors register its presence. How open the door and remove the cop.
On your microwave panel, go and press the Stop/Clear” button. This should reset your sensors to case the beeping without doing the hard reset option. However, if the button doesn’t turn off the beeping then you do a hard reset or go into “Silent” mode.
How to Do a Hard Reset of Your Microwave
You can silence or alleviate incessant beeping from your microwave by also doing the hard reset. Reserve this for microwaves that won’t stop beeping as a troubleshooting method. Microwaves that keep on beeping even when food is placed on it require immediate troubleshooting or unplugging.
To do a hard reset, unplug the microwave, wait 5 minutes, and plug it back in. If you’ve ever done a hard reset on your Home Wi-Fi router, it works on the same principle. It refreshes your microwave back to its original settings without you doing anything complicated with it.
How Does the Hard Reset Help with the Beeping?
This method gets rid of excess electricity while forcing the microwave’s sensors and computers to go back to their original state or factory settings. Once you plug the device and turn it on, the beeping should already stop.
If the microwave keeps beeping then it’s about time you had an appliance repair shop take a look at what’s making the appliance glitch when push comes to shove.
In essence, like when it comes to skin a cat, there’s more than one way to mute your microwave. The simplest ones involve pushing the sound or mute button. The more complicated ones require reprogramming your smart microwave through app settings.
If you’re an electrician or someone who loves taking appliances apart, the temptation to simply remove the soundbox and be done with it might be quite great. However, even though this works superbly in some appliances, attempting this on your microwave might lead to horrible consequences.
